Graveside services for James E.
Ike Challis, 79, New London, are
scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday
in Pleasant Hill Cemetery with
the Rev. Ken Hayman officiating
under direction of Burrows
Overton Funeral Home, Overton.
Mr. Challis died Oct. 6, 2006,
in New London.
He was born Dec. 3, 1926, in
Apache, Okla., to Wendell Martin
and Marguerite McCauley Challis.
He moved to East Texas in 1937
and was in the London school
explosion on March 18, 1937,
graduating in 1944. He was a
member of London Baptist Church,
Myrtle Masonic Lodge 145 in
Oklahoma City, Okla., and served
as a volunteer at London Museum
and Tea Room. He retired in 1986
from Ideco Dresser as a sales
service manager with 30 years
service, and served in the Army
during World War II in the South
Pacific.
Survivors include sons, Jim
Challis, Moore, Okla., Pat
Challis, Claremore, Okla.;
stepson, Ron Elrod, Granbury;
brother, John Challis, Spring
Hill; seven grandchildren; seven
great-grandchildren; and one
niece.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m.
Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Museum

Graveside
services for Marie Beard
Challis, 76, of New London, will
be 2 p.m. today, April 5, 2005,
at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, in
New London, with the Rev. Kelly
S. Krone and Mr. Hunter Hawkins
officiating. Arrangements are by
Burrows Overton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Challis died Sunday, April
3, 2005, in a local medical
center. Born May 9, 1928, in
Haynesville, LA, to George and
Anna Norton Beard, she was a
member of London Baptist Church.
She moved to East Texas in the
early thirties, and was a
student at New London School
during the gas explosion.
Survivors include her husband of
32 years, Ike Challis of New
London; son, Ronny Elwood and
wife, Susan, of Arlington; two
step-sons, Jim Challis of
Wichita, Kan. and Pat Challis
and wife, Jill, of Claremore,
Okla.; brother, Alton Beard of
Kilgore; brother-in-law, John
Challis and wife, Jean, of
Springhill; six grandchildren,
including Deanna Elrod Elkins
and husband, Evan, of McKinney,
Emily, and Meagan Elkins; niece,
Sheila Frazier of New London;
several other nieces and
nephews; and five
great-grandchildren.
Visitation was 6-8 p.m. Monday,
April 4, 2005, at the funeral
home. |

Barbara Alyne Fuller May

ODESSA -
Barbara Alyne Fuller, 73, of
Odessa died of cancer on Sept.
18, 1999, in a local hospital.
Alyne was born May 12, 1926, in
Bishop in Nueces County to Hugh
E. and Mary Jane Miller. She
attended school in New London
and survived the school
explosion there in 1937. She was
a talented musician and won
state as a flutist in high
school. She attended Kilgore
Junior College and was a member
of the band. She married Jon
Fuller Sr. on July 7, 1947, in
New London. They moved to Odessa
in December 1957.
An active member of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day
Saints, she worked diligently in
many church positions. In
addition to church work, she
enjoyed baking, sewing,
needlepoint and doing
genealogical research. She
worked some outside the home and
was one of the first female
letter carriers in Texas. She
worked in food service and
served as the manager of the
Blackshear cafeteria and the Ham
Yankee restaurant.
Known affectionately as "Sissy"
to her family, Alyne was a
loving wife and mother and a
doting grandmother.
She leaves behind her husband of
52 years, one son, five
daughters, eleven grandchildren
and one great-grandchild. Her
children are Barbara Earl and
husband, Tony, of Seattle, Dr.
Jon Fuller Jr. and wife, Paula,
of Moab, Utah, uzanne Fletcher
and husband, Tommy, of Abilene,
Melinda McGaugh and husband,
Rick, of Lubbock, Nancy Fuller
of Midland and Scharlotte Smith
and husband, GayIon, of Norman,
Okla. A sister, Corrinne Foley,
resides in Garland.
The family will receive friends
from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept.
20, 1999, in Hubbard-Kelly
Funeral Home.
Funeral services are scheduled
for 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept.
21, 1999, in the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-Day Saints,
2011 N. Washington, with Bishop
Spencer Thompson and Bishop
Gaylon Smith Sr. officiating.
The eulogy will be brought by
Andy Varga. The interment will
follow in Rose Hill Cemetery
under the direction of
Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
Her grandsons will honor her by
serving as pallbearers. They are
Greg McGaugh, Jon Fuller III,
Gaylon Smith Jr., Ryan Fuller,
Bryan Smith and Kevin Smith.

Mr. Grigg,
86, died Saturday, May 13, 2006
at Artesia Good Samaritan
Center. Michael Joiner and Jim
McDonald will officiate at the
services with burial at Woodbine
Cemetery. Pallbearers will be
Dalton Lee Bell, John Foster,
Preston Means, Al Lewis, Johnny
Ellis and Dwayne Pounds.
Honorary pallbearers will be the
Artesia Good Sams and 0l' Codger
Coffee Group.
Mr. Grigg was born January 20,
1920 in Beasley, Texas; the son
of George Grigg and Jessie Mae
(Winn) Grigg.
On April 27, 1941 he was married
to Tana Cox in Brownfield,
Texas.
He came to Artesia in 1979 from
Pinon, and then moved to
Carlsbad in 1988.
She preceded him in death Mar.
6, 1993.
He was a Plant Operator for
Humble Oil until retiring in
1971 and became a rancher. He
was a member of Hermosa Drive
Church of Christ, Artesia Good
Sams Club, and 0l' Codgers
Coffee Group in Carlsbad. He was
a survivor of the New London
School explosion of 1937 in New
London, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his
parents, and a brother Edwin
Grigg.
Survivors include daughter Tam
Bell of Artesia; brother Bill
Grigg and wife Dorothy of
Harrison, Arkansas;
grandchildren Dalton Lee Bell,
Jole Bell, and Sarah Bell;
great-grandchildren Joel Thomas
Bell and Katelynn Paige Bell; 1
niece and 2 nephews. The family
has requested memorial
contributions be made to your
charity of choice.
Services are scheduled at 10:00
a.m. Wednesday, May 17, at
Hermosa Drive Church of Christ
for Horace Grigg, 1805 Clayton
Ave., Artesia, New Mexico. |
